IPS: Individual Placement and Support

IPS (Individual Placement and Support) supports people with severe mental health difficulties into employment. It involves intensive, individual support, a rapid job search followed by placement in paid employment, and time-unlimited in-work support for both the employee and the employer.

 

PURPOSE: This course will provide professionals with an opportunity to explore how employment specialists can use Individual Placement and Support to help people with complex health needs, to return to or remain in work.

CONTENT: 

  • Learn how IPS differentiates and supports existing vocational training methodologies.
  • Understand the relationship between work and mental heath, and why it is so important.
  • Understand the role of all parties
  • How to implement The eight principles of IPS to achieve successful outcomes
  • How these principles, when effectively combined, can contribute to a client reaching their full potential.

This module will focus on IPS principles:  

  • Client preference
  • Better off at work.

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Define what we mean by good rapport and demonstrate an understanding of why this is important in the role of the employment specialist;
  • Identify examples of successful communication with a client, highlighting active listening and good questioning skills, by evaluating a video example;
  • Demonstrate your understanding of vocational profiling by completing vocational profile documentation for a case study you are already familiar with.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify the importance of goal setting and action planning by participation in group discussion.
  • Demonstrate an ability to set SMART goals using information collected in the Vocational Profile
  • Demonstrate an understanding of action planning through the completion of an Action Plan using Smart Goals and information collected in the Vocational Profile.

  • Job development

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Define what we mean by rapid job search and demonstrate why this is important in the role of employment specialist through group discussion.
  • Identify examples of how best to communicate with employers through development of an elevator pitch demonstrating aspects of the three cups of tea method.
  • Demonstrate ability to assist clients to disclose a mental health condition to an employer through use of Initial Disclosure Discussion document, small group discussion and feedback.

The IPS principles focused on in this module are:

  • Rapid job search
  • Job development

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate ability to write a personal statement through creation of own personal statement and that of a case that is familiar to you.
  • Identify the key benefits of using a skills-based CV with an IPS client group.
  • Demonstrate an ability to use the STAR technique to build interview skills by preparing answers to interview questions

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Define what we mean by stigma and stigma in the workplace.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the employment specialist’s role in reducing stigma in the workplace through discussion of reasonable adjustments and the collaborative relationship with employers.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of reasonable adjustments and a, Keep well at work, plan by completing a KWAWP for both your case study you are familiar with and yourself.

The IPS principle focused on in this module is Time Unlimited Support

In this module you will:

  • Define the benefits of collaboration regarding IPS through reflection across all modules.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of frameworks and models that underpin IPS such as the recovery model
  • Demonstrate and ability to dispel the myths of mental health and work held by a client’s supporting network by working through scenarios using knowledge gained throughout the course.

This module will focus on these IPS principles:

  • Working with health teams
  • Client’s choice – want to work
  • Zero exclusion

This module will enable you to:

• Identify evidence that can be used in a fidelity review
• Demonstrate you have understood the IPS process and principles as you identify areas of evidence
• Demonstrate an understanding of how a fidelity review is conducted

These aims will be met during discussion and completion of the Fidelity Scale workbook and will be ongoing learning over the next 12 months.
